Characterizing underwater noise during rain at the northeast Pacific continental margin

چکیده
Large scale studies of underwater noise during rain are important for assessing the ocean environment and enabling remote sensing rates over open ocean. In this study, approximately 3.5 yrs acoustical meteorological data recorded at northeast Pacific continental margin evaluated. The acoustic a sampling rate 64 kHz depths 81 581 m shelf slope, respectively. Rain wind speeds provided by surface buoys located in vicinity each hydrophone. Average power spectra have been computed different speeds, linear nonlinear regression performed. main findings (1) slopes highly depends on frequency range, rate, speed, measurement depth; (2) levels between 200 Hz 10 significantly increase with increasing speed; (3) highest correlation spectral level occurs 13 kHz, thus, coinciding peak due to small raindrops. results study indicate that previously proposed algorithms estimating from not universally applicable but rather be adapted locations.

Underwater rain noise : sources, spectra and interpretations
An overview over the most important results obtained over the past of noise produced in water by impacts of single droplets, artificial rain and real rain is presented. Two distinct sources form the major contributors to rainfall produced noise in the sea. The raindrop impact and the pulsations of entrained air bubbles. The impact sound is produced by raindrops of all sizes, while the bubble pu...

GSA Today: v. 16, no. 2, doi: 10.1130/1052-5173(2006)016<4:TIAACM>2.0.CO;2 INTRODUCTION Forty years ago, the eastern margin of North America inspired Tuzo Wilson (1966) to ask, “Did the Atlantic close and then re-open?” The Wilson cycle of closing and opening of ocean basins incorporates the cyclic assembly and breakup of supercontinents. Alternate processes of extension and compression of cont...

The basis of this study is a new bathymetric map of the northeast Atlantic compiled from previously published maps made from conventional echosounder data, plus all Sea Beam data acquired on board the R/V JEAN CHARCOT since 1977. As most of the Sea Beam data have been obtained on the continental margin from Porcupine Seabight to the south of the Iberian Peninsula, a precise picture of the conti...
متن کاملThe continental margin is a key source of iron to the HNLC North Pacific Ocean
[1] Here we show that labile particulate iron andmanganese concentrations in the upper 500 m of the Western Subarctic Pacific, an iron-limited High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll (HNLC) region, have prominent subsurface maxima between 100–200 m, reaching 3 nM and 600 pM, respectively. The subsurface concentration maxima in particulate Fe are characterized by a more reduced oxidation state, suggesting...
متن کاملModeling Sedimentary Deposits on the Continental Margin
A first objective is to investigate the fabric (pattern) of seabed stratification on continental margins at small time and space scales (1 cm-50 cm depth into the seabed; 1 hr-3 yrs sedimentary record). To this end, we are testing the hypothesis that on muddy shelves such as the northern California shelf, Holocene event stratigraphy consists of the deposits of high-concentration storm regimes a...
